Energy Efficiency Testing and Certification of Elevators

  • When Schindler Management Asia/Pacific Ltd., a subsidiary of the world’s leading escalator and elevator companies, Schindler Group, required extensive and professional elevator energy efficiency testing, they needed support from an experienced third party. That is why they turned to TÜV Rheinland.

    Initial situation and requirements

Efficient use of energy is an increasingly significant factor in sustainable building operation.  Rising energy costs and the growing public demand for eco-friendly solutions and greener buildings have led to comprehensive energy concepts for building equipment operation and modernization as well as stricter requirements in international certification standards.

Lift and component manufacturers are facing the challenge of providing energy efficient products. Schindler Group, a leading provider of elevators, escalators and related services, is committed to state-of-the-art transportation technologies and innovative, environmentally-friendly solutions. To get a clear, detailed and reliable overview of its elevator energy efficiency value in daily use, the company required a comprehensive energy audit of its products in five cities in China.

    Solutions, results

As an internationally respected Certification Body, TÜV Rheinland was entrusted with this project requiring them to conduct elevator energy efficiency measurements according to VDI 4707-1. The VDI 4707 standards measure and classify elevators and escalators according to their energy performance. The first part of the standard focuses on the assessment of the energy efficiency of lift systems. Based on the measurements and the final report, the elevators can be classified into efficiency categories ranging from A to G.

Our experts at TÜV Rheinland helped to test the in-use elevators in five main cities in China. Every elevator was tested with special high-precision testing equipment to monitor their energy efficiency status in normal operation situations and to record significant data for the final report.

  • With the information gained during the testing, the company can better understand its own products, not only in laboratory circumstances, but also in normal daily use.
