South Africa: EnerKey - Energy as a key element of sustainable transformation

  • The EnerKey project is a South African – German collaboration, which aims to develop and implement innovative pathways and projects in urban energy supply and use in order to improve the sustainability in the region of Gauteng, South Africa. Gauteng is an urban agglomeration, where the three municipalities Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane with more than 10 mn inhabitants are located. EnerKey stands for the focus of the project on “Energy as a key element of sustainable transformation”.

    Initial situation and requirements

    The EnerKey project, comprising of German and South African researchers and businesses, will undertake to assist the region to tackle these energy challenges and develop measures to improve and optimise the sustainable development of megacities while meeting economic, social and environmental objectives.

  • The project objectives are:

    • To investigate the potentials of innovative technologies for climate protection and sustainability.
    • To show the feasibility of an integrated approach through the development and use of integrated model tools and instruments.
    • To develop and implement energy projects as pilot studies, e.g. mass SWH implementation, schools retrofit and education campaign, and a cooking and heating energy needs test site.

    Solutions, results

    Those objectives required experts with specialized knowledge in energy concepts. TÜV Rheinland was chosen as the expert in energy measurements in the transport system and climate change program and measurements because of its international acceptance and expertise in training.

    Both energy supply and sustainability were connected in one single project. The innovative pathways and projects in urban energy supply were developed and implemented in order to improve the sustainability in the region of Gauteng, South Africa. This project is a torch for further projects on sustainable transformation.
