Industrial support for climate control

Environmental challenges today are varied. From a loss of biodiversity to deforestation to an increasing number of floods and droughts, more and more people are being impacted than ever before. One of the most challenging aspects of climate change is exacerbation through anthropogenic greenhouse gases. At the Paris Climate Summit in December 2015, the global community set the goal of limiting global warming to less than two degrees Celsius, and if possible 1.5 degrees.

The role of business in UN Global Compact goals

For this goal to be feasible, companies have to play an active role. Specifics of industry support are outlined in principles seven to nine of the UN Global Compact. Essentially, the principles state that business should take a precautionary approach to environmental challenges, implement initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility and encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. Many business leaders have recognized that reducing risks to the environment does not limit, but may even open up opportunities for business.

Focus on environmental protection in business

TÜV Rheinland is one of these influential businesses. The current construction of a new efficient power station in Cologne is expected to save energy by 30% and reduce CO2 emissions. Our servers, labs and systems are run by the most energy efficient modern technology, and we reduce business travel, supplementing it with video conferencing. By reducing corporate emissions by 25% and lowering energy consumption by 20% per employee by 2020 (as compared with baseline measurements from 2010), we strive to hold ourselves to high standards. Furthermore, we assist businesses in becoming more environmentally friendly and future-oriented. We offer services for the maintenance of renewable energy technologies. Find out more about our green solutions on our website.

Additionally, TÜV Rheinland and the WWF are working together on a comprehensive range of tools and initiatives geared towards environmental protection, including green office, low carbon office operations and low carbon-manufacturing programs. These programs have been designed to help businesses reach their goals for climate change mitigation.
