Expanded Scope at Power Plant Operator

Investigation of four power plants

A large power plant operator in Ireland approached us in 2013 to verify whether its existing fleet of conventional power plants was technically capable of operating under a newly defined standard, which allows higher-frequency fluctuations in the grid to accommodate rising demand for renewable power sources.

Ten experts from the Energy Systems and Automation division at TÜV Rheinland Industrie Services GmbH (TIS) are working closely with TÜV Rheinland Werkstoffprüfung GmbH (TWP) and external experts to investigate four Irish plants from September 2015 until the end of 2017.

The proposed studies are designed to determine whether the generators at the plants meet the new standard. They also aim to establish the implications for the integrity and lifecycle of these units under the new standard, and to identify areas requiring attention in the event of non-compliance. In addition, our work encompasses a grid analysis to examine the impact of disturbances on the plants as well as feedback on the surrounding network.

Continued success amid broadening scope

Our experts have been able to deliver analyses in a timely manner, and our client is satisfied with our close cooperation and thorough communication. Thus, TIS has been granted oversight of two further plants beyond the original project scope. The new units are gas-fired power stations, while the original plants use steam and water turbines.
